Carbon Neutral Development
A potential development's impact on climate change is becoming a key consideration in planning new developments, with local authorities also introducing their own policies and guidance in relation to this. There are a variety of issues to be considered, particularly relating to energy (e.g. reducing CO² emissions), water (e.g. water conservation, drainage) and waste (e.g. monitoring and managing waste to reduce construction costs).
A key focus of the planning working group is the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions in developments.
Working towards carbon neutral development: information, best practice and training.
Location: South East of England
Aims: The aim of this project is to provide clear information and training services to the sector on best practice and costs involved in achieving high standards in carbon emission reduction in new developments as well as further information relating to existing housing stock.
Objectives: To address the aims of the project SECBE will:
- Disseminate general information on the current issues and legislation relating to carbon neutrality and signpost/link into further sources of information
- Provide training to the industry detailing best practice
- Update on emerging legislation and best practice
Partners: The project will be managed by SECBE. SECBE are currently seeking funding opportunities for the project
Actions:

- Delivery of regional training workshops on best practice to lead into launch of web portal
- Delivery of associated update/briefing events on current legislation/best practice
Outcomes:
- Improved overall developer knowledge of issues and emerging policies/legislation involved
- Greater clarity and cost-effectiveness for developers seeking to achieve high standards in carbon emission reduction
- Stimulated market demand to improve housing stock (new and existing)
- Reduction of carbon emissions in development of new housing and existing housing stock
